Man United legend Dwight Yorke is the latest to make an embarrassing claim about West Ham star Declan Rice.

The beauty of football is that it is a game of opinions and everyone is entitled to theirs.

Unfortunately for West Ham fans, though, there are some pundits out there who fail to think before they open their mouths.

Show me a pundit who doesn’t rate Rice as one of the best midfielders in Europe and I’ll show you someone trying to play Devil’s Advocate in a desperate bid to stay relevant. Or in this case, Red Devils Advocate.

It says everything that West Ham captain Rice has been linked with a list of the biggest and best clubs across Europe for the last two or three years now including Manchester United.

Many feel Hammers hero Rice – who has often been likened to a modern day Roy Keane – is just what Man United need as part of Erik ten Hag’s rejuvenation project at Old Trafford.

West Ham fans know full well that Rice will be sold this summer and links to the likes of Man United won’t go away.

It took the rest of the world some time to wake up to West Ham talisman Rice’s supreme talent.

He has had to gradually earn the respect of many rival fans and pundits with top performance after top performance for club and country over the last few years.

But some pundits insist on making themselves look stupid by claiming Rice is overrated.

In the last week alone we have had Graeme Souness and the tiresome bore that is Jamie O’Hara claiming Rice isn’t all that.

Souness even sparked an angry reaction from West Ham boss David Moyes when he suggested Rice is not a top midfielder and would be better in defence. But the opinion of the former midfield great does at least carry some weight unlike O’Hara.

Now Man United legend Dwight Yorke is the latest to make an embarrassing claim about West Ham star Rice.

Yorke, who was part of Man United’s famous treble-winning team, says Rice is overrated and not worth the money being touted for him.

“David Moyes has said Declan Rice would break the transfer record because he’s seen how much Chelsea spent on Enzo Fernandez,” Man United legend Yorke told a web blog in a lengthy, wide-ranging interview – as quoted by Metro.

“Rice is an English product so Moyes has to big him up, you can’t let all the foreigners come and take the limelight!

“‘Rice is a good player but he does not influence the game enough at a top level for me. I would not say he is as tremendous as everyone makes him out to be.”

Dear oh dear.

As I said at the top of the article, everyone is entitled to their opinion. So here’s mine – perhaps we are seeing why Yorke has struggled to forge a career in management if this is an example of his judgement on players.
