West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was furious about Callum Wilson’s disallowed goal against Arsenal.
Wilson’s equaliser was ruled out by VAR after Pablo Felipe held David Raya’s arm as the set-piece was delivered.
While most would agree that Pablo impeded Raya, the incident has raised questions about inconsistency from referees.
Hermansen has now explained why the decision made no sense after what he has experienced throughout the season.
Nothing can change now – but what do YOU want to hear from the PGMO?! 😳
I want to know why Rice on Dinos was ignored! 😡
Mads Hermansen reacts to West Ham’s disallowed goal against Arsenal
Every Premier League fan would have noticed a significant change in set pieces during the 2025/26 season.
The most popular tactic has been to surround the goalkeeper to prevent them from catching or punching the ball.
In many cases, this has also involved holding, pushing, pulling and any other form of obstructing the goalkeeper.
Arsenal have arguably been the biggest beneficiaries of this new tactic, scoring the most goals from set pieces this season.
That is why West Ham feel so hard done by after VAR ruled out Wilson’s equalising goal on Sunday afternoon.
Indeed, Hermansen claims that “every goalkeeper” has been dealing with the same issues from set pieces.
“I’m just really, really angry about this,” Hermansen told whufc.com. “I can’t understand from a goalkeeping perspective, during a full season of illegal blocks and pulling and pushing on corners, to make such a call in a game like this.
Give us your response to Callum Wilson’s VAR heartbreak? 😫
The right call? Or harsh on Pablo?
“I cannot understand. I agree you can see grabs, and you can give it as a foul, but you have to be consistent during the season.
“We just watched it again. You can see Dinos is getting pulled, Tomas is getting pulled. And yes, even Pablo, before he apparently committed a foul, is getting pulled around.
“I think you can give a foul, but you need to do it every time. You need to give it throughout the season. You can ask every goalkeeper in the league. They’ve been pulled, blocked illegally, stuff like this.
“It’s beyond my… I cannot understand why, at this moment, he will give it and stand there for four minutes, five minutes, and try to find it.”
It makes no sense to have ignored the problem for most of the season, only to make a huge call in gameweek 36.
West Ham have since requested an explanation from the PGMO, but the damage has already been done.
