Leeds play host to West Ham in the three o’clock Premier League kick-off tomorrow.

The Hammers beat the Whites at Elland Road and the London Stadium last season.

Leeds were naive tactically and went for both games, allowing West Ham to hit them on the counter attack.

It was another aspect of the tactics employed by Marcelo Bielsa that caught one West Ham player’s eye, however.

Leeds v West Ham; Cresswell makes tactical observation

Bielsa is well-known for insisting that his players go one-on-one with their opponents.

And West Ham ace Cresswell labelled that system as ‘strange’, when speaking to WHUFC.com:

“They’ll be very hard-working and I think they’re a very good side. They run all over the pitch. We played them away last year and we won 2-1, but the energy levels that their boys have were very strong. It’s strange when a team goes one v one with you all over the park, the left-back going to the right wing and he’ll stay with his marker or whatever, but they’re a fantastic team and I’m sure it’s going to be a tough game on Saturday.”

West Ham exploited Leeds’ setup and tactical naivety last season.

The Hammers players will have to be on their very best form, however, if they are to leave Elland Road with maximum points.

Leeds can hurt any team they come up against.

And how the West Ham boys deal with the Whites’ man marking system all over the pitch will have a huge bearing on the outcome of the game.
