Brilliant Issa Diop could save West Ham United millions

Issa Diop was quite simply brilliant for West Ham United against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last night.

Diop’s form has been patchy at best over the past few years. He can be great at times but on other occasions his concentration and positioning badly lets him down.

That was not the case last night though…what a performance from the former Toulouse ace!

He looked like the player we signed back in 2018 for £25 million (The Express).

Diop’s form over the past 12-24 months has been so concerning that West Ham boss David Moyes was allegedly prepared to sell him in the summer (ExWHUemployee).

Last night’s display against Manchester United proves that Moyes was right to keep him at the London Stadium, however.

The 24-year-old really does have so much potential. He is perfectly built to succeed at the very highest level as an elite centre-back.

If West Ham would have moved Diop on, we wouldn’t have received much money for him, such was level of his regression over the past two years. And Moyes would have had to spent heavily to bring in another centre-back.

Brilliant Issa Diop could save West Ham millions

Diop’s display against Manchester United proves we have exactly what we need already at the club, however.

The 24-year-old was totally dominant in the air, quick along the ground and made some superb last ditch blocks and tackles.

Diop made three interceptions, seven clearances, one block and two tackles last night. He also won two aerial duels and completed 93.3 per cent of his 30 attempted passes (Who Scored).

That’s the Issa Diop we know and love! The former Toulouse ace really does have all of the tools needed to be a hugely important figure for West Ham over the next decade.

Kurt Zouma’s recent arrival should help the 24-year-old improve as an all-round defender no-end.

And if Diop continues to show the form that he did last night against Man United, he may well end up saving West Ham and David Moyes millions in the transfer market.
