Jarrod Bowen has ‘run out of words’ for how good ‘underrated’ West Ham teammate is

These days, Jarrod Bowen is short of superlatives when discussing the talents of West Ham United’s fellow Premier League Player of the Month nominee Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The captain still has a few positive adjectives to say about Mateus Fernandes, though. ‘Incredible’, being one of them.

Jarrod Bowen was speaking as West Ham United prepare to make the short trip across the capital to Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. Both Bowen and Mavropanos are up for the Player of the Month award – the first time since five years that two Hammers have been nominated at the same time – while Fernandes is determined to avoid a repeat of last season’s relegation with Southampton.

TRUE or FALSE? Dinos Mavropanos has been West Ham’s BEST player in 2026 🔥

In conversation with the club’s official website, the optimism in the captain’s words leapt off the page. Despite still being only two points above Tottenham in 18th, if you were to look at results since Callum Wilson scored a stoppage time winner at Spurs on January 17th, the Hammers would be in a Europa League position.

“[My teammates] have certainly pulled their finger out and stepped up in a way that they know that they can,” Bowen said. “I think of players like Mateus, who’s been incredible.

“I think of players like Cry [Summerville], who’s had such a tough time of injuries, but to come back from those injuries that he’s had and be a big game player and change games for us, win games for us, it says a lot about him as well, about his mentality.

“He has felt like a new signing because of the injury and how long he was out for.

“Dinos, I remember I did an interview while I was away with England and someone asked me who the most underrated player is here and I said it was Dinos. I remember at the time, people didn’t agree with me. Certainly now, people are seeing Dinos.

“I’ve just run out of words for him and for what he’s doing. He’s scoring goals, he’s stepping up with the way he’s defended.

“So, lots of players have stepped up and you need that.”

Bowen says Hammers have many goalscoring threats these days

What changes are you making to this team? Just don’t think Wilson should start 😬

In addition to five clean sheets in his last ten outings, Mavropanos can secure a unique place in West Ham’s history this weekend.

No centre-back has scored more than three goals in a single Premier League campaign. Thanks to his equaliser against Manchester City and his brace against Wolves, Mavropanos is currently on three.

One more will make him the highest-scoring defender since the legendary Julian Dicks.

“You need threats all over the pitch,” Bowen adds, the goalscoring burden eased by the likes of Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Summerville and Tomas Soucek.

“It can’t just be one person who can decide a game. If someone’s having not their best game, someone else can step up and that’s the threats that you need. You need threats all over the pitch to decide games and I certainly think that we’ve had that.”
