The Hammers earned a vitally important three points against Spurs yesterday.
David Moyes’s men continued their push for an unlikely top four finishing. And after yesterday’s win, we are starting to believe that Champions League football next season could be a very real possibility.
Every single West Ham player put in a real shift yesterday. Pablo Fornals was one of them. The Spaniard didn’t have his best day by any means but he was resilient and maintained his focus and defensive responsibility throughout the match.
Fornals did contribute to both of our goals to be fair to him as well. His part in our second scored by Jesse Lingard was fairly obvious to see.
Jamie Redknapp highlights Pablo Fornals contribution before Michail Antonio goal
But something he did before Michail Antonio put us 1-0 up went predominantly unnoticed.
Jamie Redknapp praised the 25-year-old for the manner in which he created space for Antonio to exploit:
“I think Fornals has a really important part to play in this. Fornals is at the back post, he makes his run across the face of Dier which just attracts his attention. Then the ball just drifts in behind for Antonio. Watch Fornals make that run, that just gives that little bit of space.”
A lot of work that Fornals does goes unappreciated to be fair. He is a very hard-working, intelligent footballer.
The Spaniard deserves a lot more praise than he actually gets from the West Ham fans.
Jamie Redknapp’s astute observation yesterday serves as evidence of how much Fornals contributes to this West Ham team both defensively and in the final third.
And it’s about time that he got the credit he deserves.
