Jacob Steinberg flabbergasted at something coming out of West Ham – ‘Truly disgraceful’

So West Ham United have just received huge criticism from one of the top inside Hammers journalists – Jacob Steinberg.

Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg often has an inside ear at the London Stadium, widely believed to be from none other than West Ham co-owner David Sullivan himself.

However, and in all fairness to him, he has never shied away from criticising the club, in spite of his inside track to news.

Steinberg was highly critical of the Hammers’ January transfer business six months ago, or lack of it so to speak.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, and West Ham now seem to be acting like a proper modern day club with Julen Lopetegui at the helm.

Our transfer business has been quick and efficient, and there is real positivity that we will enjoy a successful campaign under the Spaniard.

However, not everything is rosy at the London Stadium right now…

So the Hammers kick off our 2024/25 campaign on August 17th with a home game against Aston Villa.

The game is an eagerly anticipated one, with Lopetegui set to take the reins at the London Stadium for the first time ever in a competitive match.

However, there is some ill-feeling being aimed towards the board ahead of the first Premier League game of the season, due to ticket pricing.

Recently, supporters groups such as Hammers United have launched a petition after season ticket prices rose above the rate of inflation.

And now things have got even worse, after it emerged that new concessions are now restricted to bands five and six.

That means children will now be charged the full adult price for a new season ticket because there are no more concessions seated together.

Because Aston Villa has been classed as a Category A game, the ticket prices are maxing out at a staggering £105.

But it’s the prices at the lower end of the scale that has drawn the most unwanted attention.

Guardian journalist Steinberg has hit out at West Ham for the ticket pricing structure for our Premier League opener against Aston Villa at the London Stadium next month.

Steinberg took to his official X account to share his dismay:

I have to say, I totally agree with him – Steinberg is bang on the money here.

However, the counter argument would be that it’s all about supply and demand. If West Ham manage to sell-out the London Stadium for the Villa game, then it will be a job well done by the owners right?

Not necessarily.

Football has always been about the fans, and there is a real danger that large sections of our fanbase are being driven out of the club, due to unaffordable ticket pricing.

Jacob Steinberg has it spot on about the West Ham ticket prices – £45 for the cheapest under-18 ticket is incomprehensible.

That has to change going forward as far as I’m concerned, if the Hammers want to maintain the large vibrant youthful following we have.
