Journalist Jacob Steinberg has delivered devastating West Ham news but has made a claim about signings too.

It’s been a pretty grim start to 2024 for West Ham all things considered.

The Hammers ended 2023 on a high having beaten Arsenal and Man United.

But the loss of Mohammed Kudus and Nayef Aguerd to AFCON has coincided with a spate of injuries to key players.

It has showed in drab home draws with Brighton and Championship Bristol City.

Steinberg delivers devastating West Ham news

The latter saw Lucas Paqueta suffer the recurrence of a calf injury within the opening exchanges.

He was followed down the tunnel by Konstantinos Mavropanos before half-time with a sore looking rib injury.

The misery was complete when top scorer Jarrod Bowen hobbled off with a worrying ankle injury at the death.

Not to mention Michail Antonio’s own injury setback in training which will sideline him until next month too.

It has caused concern among West Ham fans with the club fighting for a top six finish.

Huge double blow

And they were right to be worried it seems.

Because Jacob Steinberg has delivered devastating West Ham news but makes a claim about signings.

Writing on The Guardian website, Steinberg has revealed Paqueta will be out for a month and must see a specialist after a scan on his calf injury.

And Bowen’s injury is also causing concern with no timescale put on his return after a scan.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel for supporters, though.

Loan signings claim made

Steinberg claims West Ham are looking at short-term loan deals in the January transfer window as a result of the injury issues.

“Lucas Paquetá will see a specialist for further assessment on a calf injury that will keep the West Ham midfielder out for four weeks,” Steinberg said.

“Bowen, who hurt an ankle during added time against Bristol City, and Paquetá underwent scans on their injuries earlier this week and the results were not positive…

“Paquetá is not expected to play again this month and it is unclear when Bowen, who has scored 14 goals and forced his way into the England squad this season, will be back.”
