An Italian journalist has mocked West Ham over Gianluca Scamacca and made an extremely bold claim that will leave David Moyes sweating.

After failing to make things work with Gianluca Scamacca at West Ham and then deciding not to sign a replacement, the last thing David Moyes needs to see is the Italian become another Sebastien Haller.

But that’s exactly what seems to be happening after the striker’s return to Serie A with Atalanta after just one season with the Hammers.

West Ham fans feel Michail Antonio, who turns 34 in a few months, has had his day as the club’s starting striker.

Indeed Moyes has admitted as much – albeit before giving Antonio one last chance to prove that theory wrong against Brentford only for it to backfire spectacularly.

There is no lack of irony that Antonio, who has not scored since August, missed from one yard to essentially cost West Ham the game in a 3-2 defeat at Brentford while Scamacca was once again scoring for Atalanta.

Italian journalist mocks West Ham over Gianluca Scamacca and makes extremely bold claim that will leave David Moyes sweating

Last week Scamacca scored an amazing back-heel nutmeg goal and piledriver while also laying on an assist in an Atalanta win.

And he scored another real striker’s goal in a game against Inter Milan at the weekend.

Now an Italian journalist has mocked West Ham over Scamacca and made an extremely bold claim that will leave Moyes sweating.

In his column for The Daily Mail, Alvise Cagnazzo says West Ham made a ‘big mistake’ letting Scamacca go.

And he says the Hammers are in danger of looking very silly indeed because Scamacca is on his way to becoming the best Italian striker in Serie A and a key player for the national team.

Cagnazzo also said West Ham are already a ‘distant memory’ for Scamacca.

‘What a big mistake you made West Ham’

“West Ham, what a big mistake you made letting Scamacca go!” Cagnazzo said.

“Gianluca Scamacca has become a central pivot at Atalanta, and already looks far better than he ever did at West Ham…

“West Ham may have many regrets for letting him go because Scamacca will become one of the three best Italian strikers in the space of a few months and will probably soon be a protagonist with the Italian national team.

“When he holds the ball up he resembles David Trezeguet, but unlike the former French centre forward, he still doesn’t have a great feeling with the goal despite his statistical numbers clearly improving. He only received one playable ball in the whole match and managed to turn it into a goal, his fifth of the season. The return to Italy allowed him to recover enthusiasm and self-esteem – the Gasperini treatment has definitely improved him…

“His failure at West Ham is now just a distant memory and Scamacca can finally work to become the best Italian number nine in Serie A.”

Moyes will be sweating on another Haller – but this time it’s on him

The Hammers boss will be worried that Scamacca is going to make him look silly like Haller.

With Haller, Moyes could be forgiven as he was not the man who signed the £45m man from Eintracht Frankfurt.

But West Ham shelled out £35m for Scamacca on Moyes’ watch at a time when he had ultimate say on all transfers.

If the journalist’s claim comes true about Scamacca’s rise to prominence it will leave Moyes and West Ham with egg on their faces.

And it will perhaps only serve to enhance the credentials and power of technical director Tim Steidten when it comes to recruitment.
