'I can't believe': Jamie Carragher hits the nail on the head with brilliant Jesse Lingard rant

Jamie Carragher has offered a very simple explanation why Jesse Lingard chose to join Nottingham Forest over West Ham this summer.

The 29-year-old rejected the chance to return to the London Stadium, and instead chose to join Nottingham Forest on a one-year deal.

Lingard was a huge hit with West Ham during his loan spell in East London midway through the 2020/21 campaign.

Jesse returned to Manchester United rather than stay with the Hammers in the summer of 2021, however, and the rest is history.

The 32-capped England international wasn’t given many opportunities of first-team football and left Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer. The real surprise came when he picked his next club…

Jamie Carragher delivers Jesse Lingard verdict

Many West Ham fans were shocked when the 29-year-old opted to join Forest on a free transfer rather than return to the London Stadium.

And it seems as though Carragher was equally dismayed.

The ex-Liverpool man was speaking on Sky Sports’ Overlap Live Fan Debate, and responded when asked whether he was surprised that Lingard chose Nottingham Forest over West Ham, as quoted by The Daily Mail:

“He [Jesse Lingard] went there [Nottingham Forest] for the money. I love Nottingham Forest, that they are back [in the Premier League]. If any footballer is picking Nottingham Forest right now, before West Ham and what they’ve done in the last two or three years, they’ve obviously gone there for a few quid. And, the fact that he’s only signed for a year means that next year on a free or Bosman. There’s a good chance Forest could go down, but it puts Jesse Lingard in a good position if he gets eight to ten goals for them. But, if West Ham want you right now, I can’t believe he never went to West Ham. It’s brilliant for Nottingham Forest.”

We have to agree with Carragher.

The wage packet, including the signing on fee, offered by Forest was obviously superior to the one West Ham were prepared to give him.

At the end of the day, Jesse has got to do the best thing for him and his family’s future. We still find it hard to believe that he didn’t rejoin West Ham though, he could have been part of something very special at the London Stadium.

And Jamie Carragher didn’t pull any punches when sharing why he believes Jesse Lingard chose Forest over West Ham this summer.
