West Ham United players were back training at Rush Green yesterday for the first time since the end of the season.

Julen Lopetegui got a close look at his West Ham squad for the first time yesterday at the club’s training base.

The Spaniard is expected to make at least four more signings before the summer transfer window slams shut, but he may well be looking to give a few fringe players fresh chances to impress as well.

During David Moyes’ time in charge at the London Stadium, there were a handful of first-team players who were completely ostracised from the starting lineup.

That may well all change now with Lopetegui in charge. Everyone is starting from scratch with a clean slate.

However, one player who’s been with us for a year hasn’t even been involved in one single training session with the club yet…until yesterday that was.

Forgotten West Ham man Andy Irving pictured in training

The Hammers posted a succession of training pictures on the club’s official website yesterday, during Julen Lopetegui’s first day taking charge at Rush Green.

There were plenty of familiar faces on display at West Ham’s training base, including the odd few youngsters and new signings Luis Guilherme and Wes Foderingham.

However, one man who we actually signed last summer was pictured training with the Hammers first-team for the first time.

Andy Irving was alongside Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell when the cameras caught him:

Irving recently suggested that he’s still hoping to play a key role for the Hammers next season.

David Moyes brought Andy Irving to the London Stadium from from SK Austria Klagenfurt on transfer deadline day, and then immediately loaned him back to the Austrian club.

Sky Sports Austria claimed that the Hammers paid around £3 million to sign the 24-year-old.

He enjoyed a decent campaign out in Austria last season, and the highlight was when he bagged a superb hat-trick back in April during a come from behind 4-3 win for his team.

So could Andy Irving really make an impact for West Ham this season? Lopetegui will give him a chance to prove himself, that’s for sure.

Whether the Scot grabs that opportunity with both hands is another matter entirely of course.
