West Ham are lining up a move to sign Mykola Matviyenko in the January transfer window and it could mean the end for one Hammer.

Mykola Matviyenko is firmly on the radar of West Ham according to a report from TEAMtalk, with Hammers boss David Moyes keen to strengthen his central defensive ranks.

The Scot brought Konstantinos Mavropanos to the London Stadium in the summer, and he already looks like a brilliant signing.

However, 35-year-old Angelo Ogbonna is well past it now and will probably leave West Ham at the end of the season.

In addition to that, the form of Nayef Aguerd is a huge concern. He has clearly become a target for the opposition this season.

It’s so easy to get past him as well with that ball over the top. Teams are doing it time and time again against us. Moyes is obviously aware of this and is allegedly plotting a move to address the problem in January…

Mykola Matviyenko on West Ham radar

The 27-year-old Ukrainian is a left-footed centre-back. He can play as a left-back as well if need be.

It’s no coincidence that Moyes is on the hunt for a left-side central defender in my opinion. Aguerd has been so poor recently so if there is a chance for Moyes to make an upgrade, I’m sure he will.

The Moroccan, who earns £64k-a-week at the London Stadium (Salary Sport), is far too error-prone. His positional awareness is really poor and he’s rash in both his challenges and decision making.

Matviyenko is a far more solid operator and a better all-round defender.

Matviyenko is an exceptional passer of the football. In six Champions League appearances for Shakhtar last season, the defender averaged 73.8 passes per game and recorded an incredibly impressive completion rate of 88.7 % (Who Scored).

He’s strong in the tackle and in the air as well.

He is valued at around £25 million by Shakhtar Donetsk according to a report from SportArena. That sounds like decent value to me.

If West Ham could get anything like £40 million or more for Nayef Aguerd, Moyes shouldn’t think twice about selling him and replacing him with Mykola Matviyenko.
