Fabrizio Romano has confirmed West Ham have beaten Spurs to the top Director of Football appointment of Tim Steidten.

West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur have been planning big changes ahead of the summer transfer window.

Hammers News reported on claims from journalist Jacob Steinberg recently that majority stakeholder David Sullivan has been leading a push to bring in a top level Director of Football at West Ham.

Over at bitter rivals Tottenham, chairman Daniel Levy is also said to be eager to appoint a director of football having brought in Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham are looking to fill the role left by Fabio Paratici after he was handed a 30-month ban by Fifa for his involvement in the Juventus scandal.

Meanwhile West Ham want to appoint a DoF alongside sporting director Mark Noble to improve recruitment and how transfer money is spent.

There is no love lost between West Ham and Tottenham.

So neither will want to be outdone especially as Spurs and the Hammers have been linked with a mutual interest in several candidates including Brentford’s Lee Dykes, ex Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards and former former Bayer Leverkusen man Tim Steidten.

Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed West Ham have beaten Spurs to the top Director of Football appointment of Steidten.

Announcement expected soon from Hammers as Spurs search goes on

But he says West Ham have won the race and an announcement will be made soon.

“West Ham are set to appoint Tim Steidten as new technical director — as sources close to club confirm,” Romano said on Twitter.

“Deal done and almost sealed.

“Former Bayer Leverkusen director will try new experience in Premier League, as he was also considered by Tottenham.”

It is a real feather in the cap for Sullivan over Levy.

And West Ham will be hoping the new man can help them beat Spurs to some top talent.

Especially given the Hammers will play Europa League football again having won a major trophy last week.
