Former West Ham United loanee Evan Ferguson just cannot catch a break, faring no better with Roma in Serie A as he did in the Premier League at the London Stadium.
Another temporary spell away from Brighton and Hove Albion, another season ruined by fitness issues.
When Ferguson ended a barren run of nearly 30 games in November – scoring a club goal for the first time in nearly two years – he must have hoped this would be a turning point in a career which has drifted badly off course.

Instead, that well-taken finish in a 3-1 victory over Jamie Vardy’s Cremonese would prove to be the first of only five goals he’d score for the Giallorossi.
Ex-West Ham United striker Evan Ferguson leaves Roma after injury-ruined spell
Evan Ferguson failed to hit the target even once during eight matches at West Ham United in the second half of 2024/25.
Following another season interrupted by a cruel and unrelenting series of niggles and knocks, the Republic of Ireland international could not help but let the emotions spill out as the chance to secure a permanent £35 million move to the Stadio Olimpico passes him by.

“No one wants his time to be so short, but injuries are part of the game,” Ferguson wrote on social media in a bitter farewell message. “Thank you to everyone at Roma and the fans for their support over the past few months. I wish my teammates and everyone the best for the future.
“Forza Roma.”
Ferguson is still only 21, but it feels like a very long time ago that there was talk of a £100 million transfer for a striker who – in 2023 – became the youngest player since Michael Owen to score a Premier League hat-trick.
Since rupturing his cruciate ligament shortly after that one-man dismantling of Newcastle, Ferguson has missed nearly 50 matches due to a variety of issues.
That number is now set to rise again.

Heimir Hallgrimsson, his coach for the Republic of Ireland national team, believes Ferguson is now set to miss the start of next season. Though which club he is representing when 2025/26 kicks off is anyone’s guess at this stage.
“I spoke to him last time two or three weeks ago,” Hallgrimsson tells the BBC, Ferguson having recently undergone surgery for a season-ending ankle injury. “And it was more damage than the doctor thought in the beginning.
“So, he is probably fully fit some time September or October.”
