Declan Rice jokes that his best mate Ryan Fredericks could play up front for West Ham

Hammers talisman Declan Rice has joked that his best mate at the club Ryan Fredericks could play up front for West Ham.

West Ham fans are not happy with the club’s failure to make signings in the January window with so much to play for in the second half of the season.

Especially as manager David Moyes made it clear he was looking to bring a new striker to West Ham in the winter window after two years of trying without success.

But the wait goes on for at least another six months because the club’s owners could not deliver the players the manager wanted.

Many fans have labelled the striker situation a joke.

Speaking to West Ham’s official website yesterday, Moyes said it is difficult to find strikers better than Michail Antonio and his back-up forward Jarrod Bowen.

Well Rice and best pal at the club Fredericks think they might have the answer.

Rice may be childhood best buds with Chelsea star Mason Mount. But he and Fredericks are extremely tight at West Ham.

And speaking on Saturday Social’s Never Have I Ever, the duo joked (we hope at least) that Fredericks could do a job up front for West Ham.

“Every day,” Fredericks told Saturday Social when he and Rice were asked if they had ever wanted to play up front.

Fredericks was reminded of a post he sent out on Twitter after scoring against Sheffield United last season which said “Any chance of a game up top gaffa”.

Rice ribbed his teammate for that. But both suggested Fredericks could be handy as a striker with his pace.

“One chance, one goal mate, clinical,” Fredericks said.

“I’d do alright you know. I’d run channels, I’d get in behind.”

“You actually would,” Rice agreed.

“(Like Thierry) Henry!”

We can have a joke about it but West Ham’s striker situation will not be a laughing matter if anything happens to Antonio or Bowen for the run-in.

Former Hammer Dean Ashton says an injury to either would spell the end of West Ham’s season.

And it is hard to disagree.

So let’s hope we don’t see Fredericks up front anytime soon because it will surely mean Moyes is operating in a worst case scenario.
