David Sullivan has spoken out on West Ham’s most important signing for years as the majority owner lauds technical director Tim Steidten.

It perhaps says everything about the impact made by West Ham’s new technical director Tim Steidten that he has his own terrace chant after just one transfer window with the club.

At first the move to appoint a technical director in charge of recruitment and transfer deals looked like failing miserably.

There were reports from several journalists that Steidten did not see eye-to-eye with David Moyes and was considering walking just two weeks into the Hammers role.

And a top source inside the club confirmed he was initially ‘finding the manager very hard work’.

Moyes and Steidten found bridge over troubled waters

But relations thawed, middleground was found and West Ham put together one of the best windows in their history using the Declan Rice money.

West Ham’s German technical director has taken on cult hero-like status.

He helped the Hammers use the Rice money expertly, bringing in Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos for a combined total of £122m.

It was Steidten, though, who got deals over the line.

So much so West Ham fans only believed a signing was happening once they’d seen a picture of the player on a jet with the German.

Credit of course also has to go to Moyes, David Sullivan and the rest of the West Ham board.

But the latter has been keen to single out Steidten’s influence during a rare on-the-record interview with Claret and Hugh.

‘We did it quietly and discreetly’

He has revealed the truth on how the appointment came about. And Sullivan also lifts the lid on the important role the German played – alongside himself – in getting Jarrod Bowen’s new seven-year deal done.

“It was Steidten who joined driving force David Sullivan in helping sort out the contract which saw Jarrod Bowen sign for seven years,” the report states.

“I interviewed five or six people (for the technical director role),” Sullivan said.

“He (Steidten) was recommended by people I know in Germany.

“We did it all quietly and discretely, the West Ham United way!”

With Steidten at the recruitment helm, West Ham’s future looks very bright indeed.
