West Ham United manager David Moyes was furious with the decision not to award his side a penalty during our Europa League defeat to Freiburg last night.
Freiburg beat West Ham in the first-leg of the Europa League last-16 tie out in Germany last night, but we really should have been awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time.
David Moyes was seething at the full-time whistle, and was spotted heading straight over to referee Alejandro Hernandez.
The Hammers should have played better, there’s no denying that, and we should have won the game with or without decisions going in our favour.
Moyes alluded to this after the match when criticising Edson Alvarez for giving the ball away so cheaply for Freiburg’s goal.
However, it must be said that we deserved to be given the penalty late on. I have never seen such an obvious and easy decision to make in my life watching football!
Officials told Moyes why they didn’t award West Ham penalty vs Freiburg
The Scot spoke to reporters after the Europa League clash at The Europa-Park Stadion last night.
And Moyes highlighted exactly why the officials didn’t award his team a penalty late on when Freiburg youngster Noah Weisshaupt handled the ball inside his own box, as quoted by WHUFC.com:
“They’re trying to claim their might have been a slight push and that’s why it wasn’t given, but they should have restarted the game with a free-kick if they said it was a push. It certainly wasn’t enough of a push to warrant a free-kick, so that shouldn’t mean that it should even come into consideration. The boy has two arms above his head.”
Moyes was seen speaking to referee Alejandro Hernandez after the game, so it’s obvious that the Scot received the above explanation from the Spaniard.
It really was a farcical decision from the referee. There is absolutely no way that Tomas Soucek committed any kind of foul on Weisshaupt that forced him into handling the ball.
At the end of the day though, and this is crucial to remember, West Ham should not be having to rely on a penalty decision in order to help us get a result against a poor Freiburg side. It was not a good performance from the boys on the night, and now they really need to turn things around next week at the London Stadium.
