David Moyes made a public plea to England boss Gareth Southgate over one West Ham United star but it frustratingly fell on deaf ears.

Speculation had intensified over extra West Ham involvement in the England squad ahead of Southgate’s announcement for the November internationals.

West Ham star Declan Rice was always going to be one of the first names on Southgate’s squad and team sheet as usual.

But there had been increased talk he could be joined in the Three Lions setup by Hammers teammate Jarrod Bowen (The Athletic).

Bowen had been placed on standby for the previous two squads and has been in strong form for high-flying West Ham so far this season.

When Southgate announced his selection, though, there was no Bowen.

Indeed Southgate did not even mention Bowen when listing six or seven players who he felt were unfortunate to miss out.

That’s despite a public plea from Hammers boss Moyes to Southgate for Bowen to get a deserved call-up before the announcement was made (whufc.com).

“The other one is Jarrod Bowen, who I believe has been knocking at the door for England,” Moyes said when asked about players he felt deserve international recognition (whufc.com).

“But I realise the quality England have got in wide areas – Sancho, Grealish, Rashford, Sterling – and it’s probably the biggest competition in that part of the field.

“I think it would be good if we could get Jarrod a cap as I always get a big thrill if I can get my players get international games.”

Southgate snubbed Bowen once again, though, much to the frustration of West Ham fans and undoubtedly Moyes too.

There is a fine line between players having that carrot of earning an England call as motivation and inspiration and getting despondent after being continually snubbed.

Ian Wright was spot on when he criticised Southgate for snubbing the likes of Bowen and even his West Ham teammate Aaron Cresswell too.

Chin up Jarrod. It will come.
