West Ham United boss David Moyes was clearly unhappy with his side’s performance against Freiburg last night.
Frieburg beat West Ham 1-0 in the Europa League last-16 first-leg tie out in Germany last night, and David Moyes would have been gutted that his team didn’t at least draw the game.
The Hammers were outplayed in the end, but we definitely should have been awarded a penalty late on in the match.
It’s just such a shame that the West Ham players didn’t turn up, and that they certainly didn’t play with any kind of intent to actually win the game.
There were just too many of our star players who had off games – namely Lucas Paqueta. The 26-year-old was clearly out of sorts, and Moyes alluded to that in his post-match press conference…
David Moyes criticises West Ham player after Freiburg defeat
The Scot addressed the media last night, and let it be known that his players quite simply didn’t do enough to win the game.
One area he was really disappointed about was his players’ poor ball retention, as quoted by WHUFC.com:
“I was really surprised we didn’t reach the standards and some of the players were below where we would expect them to be. We gave the ball away far too much and in Europe it’s more difficult [to get it back].”
Now, Moyes was clearly talking about Paqueta here. The Brazilian registered a pass completion rate of just 69.4% during our defeat to Freiburg – the lowest of any West Ham player on the night (Who Scored).
I don’t expect Paqueta to be averaging an 80%+ completion rate because of the risky passes that he attempts. However, the pass rate that he recorded last night was 7% below his season average – not good enough.
David Moyes clearly wasn’t happy with West Ham United’s ball retention last night, and Lucas Paqueta was the chief culprit for our struggles in that particular department.
