West Ham United boss David Moyes has a big Alphonse Areola decision to make soon that could have huge ramifications.

The 29-year-old is currently struggling with injury problems, but when he returns to full fitness, Moyes absolutely has to start playing him as the West Ham number one in every single game.

Areola joined the Hammers on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021, and then made his move to the London Stadium a permanent one in 2022 for around £8 million (The Athletic).

Strangely though, he has had to make do with a backup role at the London Stadium, playing second fiddle to Lukasz Fabianski.

Areola was heavily linked with a loan move away from the London Stadium in January in order to salvage his international career.

And the Frenchman and David Moyes are now at a crossroads. The Scot has a very big decision to make…

David Moyes has to start Alphonse Areola regularly or risk losing him

The 29-year-old goalkeeper is in danger of wasting his best years by sitting on the Hammers bench.

The next five or six years should be the French World Cup winner’s best years, so he will surely demand to be our number one goalkeeper when he returns to full fitness.

How 37-year-old Lukasz Fabianski is keeping him out of the team in the Premier League actually blows mind.

Areola is a better shot-stopper than Fabianski and he is far superior with the ball at his feet. The ex-Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper’s range of passing and composure in possession is on another planet to the 37-year-old.

How has it got to this? Areola, who earns £120k-a-week (Spotrac) is an elite goalkeeper and should be playing week in, week out for West Ham in my opinion.

When the 6ft 5in stopper returns from injury, I believe that he has to be our number one in the Premier League.

If David Moyes doesn’t agree with that, I reckon that Alphonse Areola could be on the look out for a new club in the summer transfer window. And if he does try to leave the London Stadium, who would blame him?
