David Moyes criticised Angelo Ogbonna for his role in Brentford’s winner yesterday.
The 33-year-old centre-back has been absolutely brilliant for the Hammers over the past two seasons.
Ogbonna has been a real leader for David Moyes and his game has improved hugely since the Scot was handed the reigns at the London Stadium for the second time back in December 2019.
The Italian joined West Ham from Juventus back in the summer of 2015 for around £8 million (Daily Mail).
That now looks like an absolute bargain.
Oggy wasn’t quite at his best against Brentford yesterday, however.
David Moyes criticised Angelo Ogbonna for his role in Brentford’s winner
The Italian allowed one of the Brentford players to escape from a tight situation in the corner before a needless foul was given away.
Moyes was asked by reporters whether Ogbonna was ‘silly’ to give away the free-kick in dying minutes, as quoted by Football.London:
“Yeah, I thought it was. I thought the player should never have been able to wriggle away from the byline. He got out of a couple of players, I think a couple of players were involved and we gave away a free-kick, which was stupid.”
Everyone makes mistakes. And Ogbonna has been brilliant on the whole for the Hammers since Moyes returned to the London Stadium.
So it is important not to get carried away with one poor performance.
The Italian is very strong mentally, so he will undoubtedly bounce back from yesterday’s underwhelming display.
Ogbonna will be needed in what will be a long, hard and physically challenging season ahead. Let’s hope that he returns to his best very soon.
