David Moyes completely contradicted himself over the quality of his West Ham stars with strange comments in pre and post match interviews.

Those watching West Ham’s 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the TV would have seen an interview with David Moyes at Rush Green filmed ahead of the match.

In the Sky Sports interview, Vicky Gomersall is walking around a field chatting with the Hammers boss and asks him what is behind the club’s good start to the season.

As Moyes lists the reasons he heaps praise on the quality of his players and the signings West Ham made in the summer.

“Now I have to say we’ve signed a couple of really good players that have helped us as well,” Moyes told Gomersall on Sky Sports.

“I think West Ham are a club which are improving, growing, getting better, lots of good things going on.”

But Moyes completely contradicted himself over the quality of West Ham stars with strange comments in his pre and post match interviews.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the defeat, where in mitigation emotions are running high, Moyes then questioned the quality of his players and their ability to compete with the likes of Villa for the European spots.

Was Hammers boss sending a message to guard against complacency?

“I see the players every day and I know the levels (required) and for us to challenge Aston Villa’s and the teams at the top you’re talking about, we’ve going to have to play really well and keep it up,” Moyes said after the game.

“Because I get a chance to see the players, they’re good players but as you can see today, if this is the levels we’re having to play at we’re going to have to improve greatly on what we done today.”

Moyes is not one for knee-jerk reactions.

So this seems very much like a calculated message to send a bit of a wake-up call and guard against complacency from the manager.

A little public shot across the bows to the players as if to say ‘I’m watching the levels and the standards here. don’t let them drop’.

Especially ahead of an important run of games against teams where West Ham will be expected to win.
