Crysencio Summerville breaks silence on his injury ‘setback’ at West Ham

Crysencio Summerville insists that he feels ‘fitter than ever’ at West Ham United despite a calf problem which rules him out of the late Premier League kick-off against Manchester City.

Hammers News have been told that Summerville is likely to miss the Aston Villa clash on March 22nd as well. A return against former employers Leeds in the FA Cup quarter-finals after the impending international break is viewed internally as the most likely target.

West Ham United will probably have to do without their leading goalscorer in 2026 for at least the next two Premier League matches, then.

But, speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, an upbeat Crysencio Summerville does not sound too devastated.

The £30 million signing from Leeds is keen to point out that this is a very different issue to the hamstring injury which saw him miss eight months of action last year.

“I missed a large part of last season and wasn’t back yet at the start of this year,” Summerville says. “I fought to return, became stronger, and mentally stronger again. The fact that I have been scoring often in recent weeks feels like a reward.

“With an injury like that, you throw away a year. That is a real shame.

“But apart from my current setback, I am fitter than ever. I take very good care of myself. I learned it all during my years in England.”

Reports in the Netherlands have even suggested that Summerville could be called up by Dutch boss Ronald Koeman for the first time in the coming days.

West Ham will obviously have issues with that should it come to pass though. Exacerbating what fortunately appears to be a pretty minor injury would be a potentially fatal blow to their survival hopes.

“The Premier League is different from the Championship,” says Summerville, who won the second-tier Player of the Year award at Elland Road in 2024. “Physically, it is incredibly demanding.

“West Ham United is a big club, with a huge number of supporters. We will keep going. And if we stay up and there is actually a World Cup in the summer, that would be very special.”
