Classy Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has congratulated ‘deserving winners’ West Ham after their epic Europa League victory.
No West Ham fans it was not a dream, we are waking up this morning as Europa League quarter-finalists after an epic 2-1 aggregate win over Spanish side Sevilla.
It was West Ham’s biggest match yet at the London Stadium. And David Moyes’s side delivered yet again.
The Hammers stepped up to the plate when it mattered most with goals from Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko ensuring West Ham are in the hat for the draw.
West Ham knew all about Sevilla’s class on the pitch heading into what was arguably the toughest draw of the last 16.
Their trophy cabinet says it all. And Sevilla showed that class on the pitch with a 1-0 win in the first leg over in Spain last week.
But on an unforgettable night in east London, West Ham overturned that deficit with a superb, controlled 2-0 victory that will go down in Hammers folklore.
Goals from Tomas Soucek and an extra-time winner from Andriy Yarmolenko did the business and put West Ham in the hat for the quarter-finals.
David Moyes knows Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui from his time over in Spain.
And the Scot had warned his players and West Ham fans to beware the ‘dark arts’ from the Spaniards in the second leg.
But while we did see plenty of that at the London Stadium, Lopetegui was always very complimentary and wary of West Ham in the build-up to both games.
And the classy Sevilla man has congratulated ‘deserving winners’ West Ham after the epic clash.

“At the end of the day we go home with a feeling of sadness, for the fans and in the dressing room,” Lopetegui said after the game (BT Sport).
“We tried really hard but we couldn’t do anything at the end, unfortunately.
“I don’t think it was a question of hunger.
“They managed to win the game, they played well, and we have to congratulate West Ham.”
Credit where it is due to the Sevilla boss. A class act.
