Chelsea apparently tried to make West Ham United star Edson Alvarez their 12th most expensive signing of all-time.

Alleged Chelsea target Edson Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in the summer of 2023, and David Moyes recently lauded the Mexican for the impact he’s already made at the London Stadium.

The Hammers paid just £34 million for the 26-year-old midfielder (Sky Sports) – an absolute steal in the modern era.

Alvarez has gone from strength to strength over the past few months, and he has shown us all that there is definitely life after Declan Rice.

So with that in mind, it may come as no surprise that he was being courted by one of the biggest, richest and most ambitious clubs in world football…

Chelsea tried to sign West Ham star Edson Alvarez

It seems like Chelsea wanted to sign the Mexico international, 26, 12 months before the Hammers got our hands on him.

And they were apparently prepared to pay £17 million more than we did for him!

Alvarez’s agent Nathan van Kooperen has come out claimed that Chelsea made a €60 million (£51 million) bid for his client whilst he was still at Ajax in the summer of 2022, as quoted by Voetbal Primeur:

“Chelsea were prepared to go very far. They wanted to do everything they could to bring him to Chelsea. But Ajax had no replacement ready, so they weren’t prepared to cooperate. They thought [qualifying for] Champions League football was very important. Chelsea went up to €60million.”

Had Chelsea been successful with their offer, Alvarez would have been their 12th most expensive signing of all-time, alongside Christopher Nkunku (Transfermarkt).

Thankfully Ajax rejected Chelsea’s offer and Edson Alvarez ended up joining West Ham United instead. We got an incredible player for a very reasonable price.

However, Ajax must now be kicking themselves for not cashing in on the 26-year-old midfielder when they had the chance for £51 million.
