Ex-West Ham pair Carlton Cole and Paul Konchesky have reminisced about one former Hammers defender.

Konchesky named a starting XI of his best teammates throughout his entire playing career, not only at West Ham.

He selected centre-back Danny Gabbidon in his line-up after playing together between 2005 and 2007.

Cole completely agreed with Gabbidon’s inclusion and made a bold statement about the Welshman’s time at West Ham.

Carlton Cole and Paul Konchesky laud former West Ham star Danny Gabbidon

Carlton Cole insisted that Danny Gabbidon was one of West Ham’s most underrated players in the Premier League era.

Gabbidon played over 100 times for the Hammers in six years, but perhaps he was never rated as highly as he deserved to be.

“What a player! I’m glad you said [his name] because he doesn’t get the credit he deserves at this football club sometimes,” Cole said.

“I feel that he goes under the radar a little bit, but people know he was a quality footballer.”

Konchesky doubled down on the Gabbidon praise, having formed a strong relationship with him on the left side of the defence.

“I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there,” Konchesky responded. “He was a fantastic footballer. He could head it, but he could play.

“He and [James Collins] played in moulds. They never wore studs. You would think a centre-back would have big studs on. Gabbs had such good balance.

“He never looked like he was running, but he was quick. I was bombing on, and Gabbs was always behind me. We had a great partnership.”

Cardiff City and Wales supporters absolutely love Gabbidon, but West Ham fans probably highlight other defenders more.

James Collins, Matthew Upson and Ian Pearce may have earned more respect from the Hammers fanbase in the 2000s.
