Callum Wilson has opened up on VAR’s controversial decision to disallow his equaliser against Arsenal.

Wilson scored with a powerful left-footed strike after the ball fell to him from Jarrod Bowen’s corner in added time.

Despite several other incidents taking place from the set piece, the referee pinpointed Pablo Felipe’s foul on David Raya.

The decision has caused uproar among Premier League supporters, not just those with claret-and-blue hats on.

Wilson has since explained why he believes the goal should not have stood, and also sent a message to the referees.

How do you feel about the decision now the VAR audio has been released? 😬

What was the correct decision? Goal, no goal or penalty? 🤔

Callum Wilson breaks silence on West Ham VAR controversy

Wilson recognised that Pablo’s contact on Raya was probably a foul, but that was not the only incident inside the penalty area.

West Ham could point to Declan Rice holding Dinos Mavropanos or Leandro Trossard holding Pablo as other examples.

Wilson also argued that nobody would have complained if only the referees had shown consistency from set pieces throughout the season.

He told Sky Sports: “For me, if it’s against us, are you saying it’s a foul? Possibly. But of course, there are incidents that have happened throughout the season that are similar.

“I just think if there’s consistency, then there are probably no complaints from anybody, and I think with that specific incident, five seconds before it, there are obviously other fouls that are in there.

“So, if you’re going to pull up one, you’re going to have to pull up all of them, really. I think he probably should have just let it see itself out and think it’s just handbags in the box, and it is what it is. But it wasn’t to be.”

Wilson reaffirmed his defence of the goal, especially as it was against the team (Arsenal) that has scored the most from set pieces.

The Gunners arguably started the trend of being particularly aggressive and obstructing the goalkeeper at corners.

“I’m going to say yes (it should’ve stood) because I scored the goal for one,” Wilson added. “But for two, we see a lot of teams nowadays doing a similar situation in the box, blocking goalkeepers.

“We analysed Arsenal’s set-pieces before the match, and there was a lot of that going on in there. That’s not just to say they do it, everybody does it.”
