An astonishing West Ham United fact has emerged after Sky Sports made an error with their statistics during coverage of the win over Aston Villa.

David Moyes has been breaking records and making history with West Ham over the last 20 months.

The Scot has turned West Ham from relegation battlers to a genuine European outfit capable of challenging for the top four.

West Ham recorded their best ever Premier League points total last season as they agonisingly missed out on a Champions League spot by a solitary win.

And the Hammers have continued this season where they left off last term.

After a fifth consecutive win in all competitions against Villa, West Ham sit fourth in the table and could leapfrog Liverpool into second with a win over the Reds this Sunday.

West Ham are also just one win – or possibly even one point – from sealing top spot in Europa League Group H – and with it a place in the last 16.

Astonishing West Ham fact emerges after Sky Sports error

But possibly the most astonishing fact to emerge about this West Ham team is the Premier League table based on form over the course of 2021 so far.

Sky Sports showed a graphic during coverage of West Ham’s 4-1 win over Villa and got it all wrong.

Sky Sports’s table had the Hammers in fourth place – still a remarkable achievement – but the figures were wrong.

Because in actual fact over 2021 so far West Ham are THIRD with more points accumulated than every other side except Manchester City and Chelsea.

West Ham have 62 points in 2021, more than Man United (61), Liverpool (58), Arsenal (58), Tottenham (51), Leicester (51) and the rest.

The Hammers are only four points behind Chelsea in second place with 66.

But Man City are in a league of their own at the top with 80 points.

There have been lots of excited West Ham fans declaring this to be the club’s best ever start to a season.

Statistically that is not strictly true because West Ham had 20 points and a plus nine goal difference after 10 games of the Dimitri Payet-inspired Farewell Boleyn season.

But when you throw in the results from the Europa League and the fact the Hammers are through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after famous wins over Man United and Man City then it surely is at least the best start West Ham have made to a Premier League campaign.

What an astonishing stat for an astonishing team.

Come. On. You. Irons.
