Aston Villa could be without star player against West Ham as Emi Martinez flies home to Argentina

Aston Villa could be without their star player against West Ham United on Sunday as Emi Martinez flies home to Argentina.

High-flying West Ham travel to Villa Park looking to consolidate their place in the Premier League’s top four.

The Hammers are aiming to make it three Prem wins in a row – and five in all competitions – after victories at Everton and at home against Tottenham.

And David Moyes’s hopes may be boosted with the news that Villa’s star player, goalkeeper Martinez, could miss the game.

According to the likes of Birmingham Live, Martinez flew back to Argentina this week to be by his father’s bedside when he required an emergency heart operation.

The player himself posted a picture on social media with his dad in hospital.

There are suggestions in other reports that Martinez could return by Sunday and will go straight into the Villa side to face West Ham if he arrives back in time.

His understudy Jed Steer will deputise if Martinez does miss the game.

“Aston Villa’s Emilano Martinez has had to return to Argentina following a family emergency regarding his father, who has undergone surgery,” Birmingham Live reports.

“The Argentine international is currently training alone in Ezeiza, which is where the national team train for their upcoming fixtures.

“He has taken to his Instagram to post a picture of himself with his father in hospital with the following caption that translates to: “Thank you very much to the AFA and Chiqui Tapia for helping me in everything in these difficult days.”

Of course some things are much more important than football.

And everyone at West Ham will no doubt join Aston Villa fans in wishing Martinez and his family well during this time.

West Ham look set to have a fully fit squad available.

That’s after right-back Vladimir Coufal – who Villa fans will know well following his shackling of Jack Grealish last season – made his comeback from a groin strain in the Carabao Cup win over Manchester City in midweek.
