Alvin Martin is not the only one who feels there may be benefits to West Ham United spending a season in the Championship.

First of all, life without David Sullivan creates a sense of cautious optimism; the sun that little bit brighter, the air that little bit sweeter.

After the living nightmare that was their 2025/26 campaign, the chance to rack up the wins and make the London Stadium feel that little bit more like home also carries plenty of appeal.

Can you spot anything interesting as West Ham return for pre-season?

Taty returns, Nuno chats with Bowen, and a couple of youngsters make an appearance

West Ham United legend Alvin Martin is hoping that relegation creates a pathway for the next generation, meanwhile. A lower quality of opposition, and a number of first-team departures, creating opportunities the likes of Andre Dike can hope to snatch.

Andre Dike could make his breakthrough at West Ham United

England U17 international Dike was spotted in Hammers training earlier this week. Nuno Espirito Santo is using the first days of pre-season as a chance to take a closer look at those waiting in the wings.

Dike racked up 16 goals for the U18s and U21s in 2025/26, cutting in from the right-hand side to often devastating effect.

Will the teen get some minutes in upcoming friendlies against Southend United and Stevenage?Hammers legend Martin is not alone in hoping that the answer is a resounding yes.

“I hope so, our incredible academy produces some incredible players,” one of Hammers News TalkingPoint users writes on our Facebook page in response to Dike’s Rush Green appearance.

“What’s the point of having an academy if we don’t give them a chance in the team?”

“One possible advantage of being relegated is now some of these young players might get a chance.”

“Let’s hope he’s given the chance he deserves.”

“If you’re good enough, Your old enough.”

“Can I just say Lamine Yamal? He was good enough at 17 [for Barcelona]!”

Hammers kids hoping to emulate Mark Noble

Following the relegation of 2003, Nigel Reo-Coker, Anton Ferdinand and Mark Noble stepped up and nailed down a spot in the first-team picture.

The likely departure of another high-profile player after Mateus Fernandes Hammers News can confirm that Crysencio Summerville has his heart set on Manchester United – may have the impact on Dike that the departure of Michael Carrick had on the emergence of Noble and Reo-Coker.

Nuno's long-time assistant is heading to the Hammers…

Rui Pedro Silva, Nottingham Forest assistant manager, and Nuno Espirito Santo, Nottingham Forest head coach, discuss tactics during the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and West Ham United at the City Ground in Nottingham, United Kingdom, on August 31, 2025.

This summer feels like a big one for Keiber Lamadrid, too; the Venezuelan prospect who returned to Rush Green newly-bearded and broader-shouldered.

As for Dike, at the age of just 18, the target will be to consolidate himself in Greg Lincoln’s U21 team following a breakthrough in 2025/26. But pre-season, and an upcoming EFL Cup clash with Portsmouth, does leave the door ajar.

“Up through the ranks, the way it should be,” another fan writes.

“Give this young lad a chance in and around the first-team.”

“Had Andre in my Thurrock district u11 team. Great lad.”
