West Ham United are thought to be eyeing up a move to sign Derby Country star Eiran Cashin in the January transfer window.
TEAMtalk claim that West Ham manager David Moyes is plotting a January transfer window move to sign Eiran Cashin from Derby, and it may well spell the end for one of our longest serving players.
The Hammers boss has a lot of work to do in January, if he is to guide his side to a successful 2023/24 campaign on all fronts.
One particular area of weakness appears to be Moyes’s centre-back department, with ongoing concerns about Kurt Zouma’s fitness, Konstantinos Mavropnaos still settling into life in the Premier League, Nayef Aguerd seemingly very error-prone and Angelo Ogbonna closing in on his 36th birthday.
I reckon that Oggy’s time at West Ham could be coming to an end soon.
The Italian has played just 111 Premier League minutes for the Hammers this season (Transfermarkt), and he has looked well off the pace recently whenever he has taken to the pitch.
West Ham signed the 35-year-old from Italian giants Juventus in the summer of 2015 for around £8 million (The Daily Mail).
And I reckon he may well be on his way in the summer…
Eiran Cashin joining West Ham could spell the end for Ogbonna
The former Juventus man is probably our fourth choice centre-back right now.
Ogbonna’s current deal expires in the summer of 2024, and I really can’t see him being offered an extension on his current terms, especially if Moyes signs Cashin from Derby.
The 22-year-old would be a smart long-term addition to Moyes’s ranks in my opinion.
In 17 League One outings for Derby so far this season, Cashin has averaged two tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 5.4 clearances and one block per game (Who Scored).
Those are some really impressive statistics. The Republic of Ireland under-21 international is a proper, old-fashioned defender – someone who relishes the physical battle, is strong in the air and on the ground as well.
TEAMtalk suggest that Derby are set to lose Eiran Cashin in the January window, with West Ham keeping very close tabs on him.
If the 22-year-old rocks up at the London Stadium, I’m pretty sure that will signal the end of Ogbonna’s time with the club.
