West Ham United beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at the London Stadium today, and David Moyes will be breathing a sigh of relief right now as a result.
Nottingham Forest led West Ham 2-1 midway through the second-half before we turned things around to win the match 3-2, and David Moyes did something that I believe shows he knows his job is on the line.
The Hammers were pushing and pushing for a winner during the final 20 minutes of the game – that is unlike a Moyes team for a start!
Corner after corner was swung in, as chance after chance was missed. However, Tomas Soucek bagged the winner for West Ham late on, and it was a vital three points for us in the end.
There was a huge sign I noticed that proves Moyes realises he has to be winning games like that one today, rather than just settling for the draw…
David Moyes knew West Ham had to beat Nottingham Forest today
In the 79th minute, Moyes brought Edson Alvarez off and replaced him with Michail Antonio, when the scores were tied at 2-2.
Now, the Scot is well know for being one of the most pragmatic managers around. When the match is level heading into the final 10 or 15 minutes, he rarely ever makes an attacking change. Respect the point is Moyes’ motto!
However, that all changed today. Whilst Antonio didn’t really do anything of note, it was the intent behind the substitution from Moyes that told the real story.
I reckon that the 60-year-old knows that his job is on the line, otherwise he never would have made such a bold substitution.
If that is correct, and the board have let him know that results must improve, then that can only be a good thing.
West Ham should have beaten Nottingham Forest comfortably today, had we gone for the jugular after going 1-0 up early on, and David Moyes will surely now realise that sitting back and soaking up pressure is not the way forward.
Maybe, just maybe, that attacking substitution today was a sign that Moyes is changing. Or maybe it was one desperate last throw of the dice from a man who knows he’s under real pressure. We won’t know until we see how we play in the games that follow the international break.
