£4 million man has literally just saved his West Ham career

One West Ham United player in particular has managed to prolong his time at the club it seems.

Things are looking up against for West Ham now after back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since March 2024.

The win over Leicester at the London Stadium on Thursday night was the first time we have won a home game without conceding since December 2023!

Graham Potter is now at the helm and he’s made a huge impact at the club already.

Not only is the football much more aesthetically pleasing, but the Hammers have improved massively from a defensive standpoint as well.

West Ham have been defending so much better as a team.

And one player in particular has epitomised the huge improvements under Potter.

Aaron Cresswell has just saved his West Ham career

So it seems like our longest serving current player could be set to extend his time in East London.

According to Claret and Hugh, the Hammers could offer Aaron Cresswell a 12-month extension on his current deal.

The 35-year-old is currently in the midst of somewhat of a renaissance, after two exceptional performances against Arsenal and Leicester City respectively over the past week.

Cresswell joined the Hammers from Ipswich Town for around £4 million in the summer of 2014 (Mirror).

He has been a fantastic player for West Ham on the whole, but we can’t ignore the fact that he has regressed badly over the last two years or so.

That’s just a fact.

Aaron Cresswell has lost any pace that he used to have, and his poor positioning and decision making has proven to be costly for West Ham on numerous occasions – notably against Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League in 2022.

However, we equally have to recognise just how much he has improved during his last two outings for the club.

Aaron Cresswell’s mind-blowing stats vs Leicester

The Liverpool-born defender has really rolled back the years since the arrival of Potter at the London Stadium.

He has shown genuine quality what with his composure in possession and exceptional passing ability.

It seems to me like Aaron Cresswell has actually improved with his positioning as well. Maybe that’s due to the fact that he’s been playing as a left-sided centre-back under Potter.

His stats against Leicester City on Thursday night were truly breathtaking…

Cresswell had an incredible 136 touches of the football, made one tackle, three interceptions, two clearances and one block.

He made an incredible 115 passes, two of which were key passes, and recorded an extraordinary completion rate of 90.4% (Who Scored).

The 35-year-old was also the highest rated player on Who Scored with a score of 8.16.

Despite his poor form over the past two years in general, I do feel like a 12-month extension for Cress would be a smart decision from the board.

Aaron Cresswell has proven that he could be really useful for West Ham in Graham Potter’s system, and given the fact that there will be a huge turnover of players at the London Stadium this summer, he will be crucial to help the transition run smoothly.
