West Ham United’s relegation from the Premier League was finally confirmed in matchday 38 of the Premier League campaign despite a 3-0 victory over Leeds at the London Stadium.

West Ham United set unwanted record as relegation is confirmed

Across the major leagues of European football, only 28 sides have been relegated with more than 38 points in the 21st century. West Ham feature twice in that list.
Glenn Roeder’s side suffered a final day demotion in 2003 despite racking up 42 points. Still, to this day, the highest number ever recorded by a team to finish in the Premier League’s bottom three.
Girona and Real Mallorca slipped out of La Liga on Saturday despite both finishing on 42 points themselves. Other teams to go down with a plus-38 tally include Villarreal [2011/12], Deportivo la Coruna [2010/11] and Bologna [2004/05].
Relegation confirmed – where do West Ham go from here?
Birmingham City and Ian Holloway’s ‘streets won’t forget’ Blackpool finished on 39 in 2010/11.
Across the whole of the 38-game Premier League era, only West Ham, Bolton and Sunderland have been relegated with at least 40 points. The Hammers are the only team to go down twice with at least 39.
A tally that would have been good enough to secure survival in each of the last 14 seasons…
