The Hammers deserved their win against Spurs. David Moyes outwitted Jose Mourinho. And that says all you need to know about the Scot’s recent renaissance.
That’s not to say that Tottenham didn’t dominate the ball.
It was a nervy second-half for the West Ham fans to endure. After the Hammers went 2-0 up, it was all Spurs.
Lucas Moura made it 2-1 with a well-taken header with around 30 minutes left to play.
West Ham held firm, however. One of the main reasons behind us keeping Tottenham at bay was the brilliant Declan Rice.
The 22-year-old put in yet another superb display today.
One of the standout moments from Rice came in the 78th minute when it looked for all the world that Spurs would equalise after Harry Kane played the ball across the six yard box.
Jamie Redknapp blown away by ‘unbelievable’ Declan Rice
The Hammers starlet made an incredible interception, however, and Moyes’s men retained their lead.
Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports (Sunday February 21st, 13:56) just how impressed he was with Rice’s contribution:
“This is the one. The defending by Declan Rice is unbelievable, putting his body on the line.”
Rice is so vitally important to West Ham. And his performance against Tottenham today underlined just how much he brings to the table.
The 22-year-old’s energy, drive and determination is infectious. If the Hammers are to make genuine progress as a football club, we have to do everything in our power to keep hold of this talented, wonderful young footballer.
These are exciting times for the West Ham fans. And we owe a lot of our recent success to Declan Rice. Long may it continue!
