David Moyes made disastrous 76th minute decision that cost West Ham dearly in FA Cup clash with Southampton

West Ham lost to Southampton in the FA Cup last night and David Moyes needs to shoulder some of the blame.

The Hammers travelled to St Mary’s to take on Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup last night.

It was a huge game for West Ham considering the fact that we haven’t won a trophy since 1980.

Unfortunately for us though, the Saints were better in the final third when it mattered and won the game 3-1.

West Ham actually played well in periods but we were far too profligate in the final third – something that is regrettably becoming a common theme for us.

One bright spark for the Hammers recently, and once again last night, was Pablo Fornals. The Spaniard has been truly exceptional for West Ham. Not only is he one of our most creative players in the final third but he also puts in a really impressive defensive shift every single time he takes to the pitch.

The 26-year-old unselfishly plays wherever Moyes asks him to. Once again, the West Ham ace operated in the left wing-back role against Southampton in the FA Cup last night.

The Scot decided to bring Nikola Vlasic on in place of Fornals in the 76th minute at St Mary’s last night when we were trailing 2-1.

There was nothing wrong with bringing the Croatian on. In fact, he should have done it far sooner. The problem was the player that he took off.

It really was a baffling call from the Hammers boss.

Fornals was unbelievable against Wolves at the London Stadium on Sunday. And he put in another class display last night.

The weight of his passing and the manner in which he breaks the lines really is a joy to watch.

The Spaniard was arguably our most potent and creative attacking outlet last night as well as providing solid cover down the left hand flank in the defensive third.

When Moyes took Fornals off with 20 minutes still to play, West Ham immediately lost control of the game against Southampton.

The 26-year-old’s technical ability when in possession of the football provides the Hammers with a great outlet when we are under the cosh. And we totally lost that when the Spaniard left the pitch at St Mary’s.

Perhaps Moyes thought that Pablo deserved a rest. Nobody knows for sure.

What is certain though is that West Ham were nowhere near as effective when Moyes brought Vlasic on for Fornals against Southampton last night.
