West Ham have clarified what will happen if the Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool ends in a draw at Anfield on Wednesday night.

West Ham take to the road as they face Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

When West Ham were drawn out of the hat to go to Liverpool having beaten Arsenal 3-1, many Hammers fans bemoaned yet another tie against a “Big Six” side.

Hardly surprising given that since the 2010/11 season, West Ham have drawn a so-called “Big Six” side 19 times in the domestic cups.

What will happen if West Ham clash with Liverpool ends in a draw

Anfield is a notoriously unhappy hunting ground for West Ham. More so than any other stadium the Hammers visit.

West Ham were more than a match for Liverpool in the league game there back in September. But profligacy and some awful defending was their undoing in a 3-1 defeat having been level at 1-1.

Things are different in the cup, though. And rules and permutations in the domestic cup competitions have been altered over the years.

David Moyes’ boys are taking on Jurgen Klopp’s Reds with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Now West Ham have clarified what will happen if the Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool ends in a draw.

Hammers confirm no extra-time

Some fans may expect there to be extra-time and then – if needed – penalties now the competition has reached the quarter-final stage.

But that is not the case.

In the club’s official pre-match preview, West Ham have confirmed that should the scores be level at the end of regular time, the tie will go straight to a penalty shootout.

“Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie will be settled on the night at Anfield,” West Ham state.

“In the event that the scores remain level after 90 minutes, the match will go straight to penalties and there will be no extra-time played.

“Before that, each manager can name nine substitutes, of whom five can be used. Each club is permitted a maximum of three opportunities to make substitutions, excluding half-time.”
