Jarrod Bowen absolutely shouldn’t be starting for West Ham United against Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.
The Hammers face Everton in the 2:15 pm Premier League kick-off today and nothing less than a win will do, after our awful start to the domestic season.
David Moyes has plenty of selection dilemmas on his hands ahead of the game – that’s what happens when you actually have a strong squad to choose from!
Jarrod Bowen is someone who shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting XI this afternoon…in my personal opinion.
Moyes needs to make a bold call with Bowen today though…
David Moyes must drop West Ham star for Everton clash
Continuing to play Jarrod Bowen from the start, in spite of his poor form, sets a dangerous precedent.
It sends the message out that Moyes’s favourites are untouchable. That simply cannot be allowed to happen.
When players know that they’re guaranteed to start in each and every game, it’s almost inevitable that their performance levels will subsequently drop.
However, if you drop them down to the bench and show them that they are not a shoo-in to be picked every week, it will give them the hunger they need to perform at their best.
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte proved exactly that yesterday with Heung-Min Son.
The South Korean has been in really poor form so far this season, so Moyes subsequently dropped him down to the bench for Spurs’ clash with Leicester City.
Son came on as a second-half substitute with a point to prove and subsequently scored a hat-trick.
We think that Moyes needs to follow Conte’s lead and leave Bowen out for the Everton vs West Ham clash this afternoon.
The Scot brought Bowen to West Ham for £18 million two-and-a-half years ago ((The Daily Mail). He has proven to be an excellent addition for us, especially for that fee.
The harsh truth of the matter though is that he’s been completely ineffective over the past five or six weeks. He needs to know that he’s not untouchable.
And dropping him for the Everton vs West Ham game today should be a no-brainer for Moyes.
