Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said that Kepa Arrizabalaga will be dropped for tomorrow’s clash with West Ham United, with Edouard Mendy set to return to the starting XI, as quoted by Football.London.
The Blues travel to the London Stadium to take on David Moyes’s Hammers side in what is a real top four six-pointer.
Chelsea are currently sitting in fourth spot in the Premier League table, level on points with fifth placed West Ham.
A win tomorrow really would be huge for us as we look to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in our history.
Chelsea will be a tough nut to crack, of course, but the fact that they have to play Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final just three days after the game tomorrow will surely work in our favour.
Thomas Tuchel says Kepa will be dropped
Another factor that could work in the Hammers’ favour is the Chelsea manager’s penchant for chopping and changing in a very important position.
Tuchel told reporters today that Kepa will drop down to the bench for the game against West Ham, with Edouard Mendy set to take the Spaniard’s place, as quoted by Football.London:
“Mendy will be in goal. The change was made for Kepa. Before then me and the goalkeeper coach decided Kepa should stay one more game to have it as a reward. To get a bit of rhythm. What he’s doing in training and the dressing room is simple outstanding in terms of personality. I’m happy he showed it on the pitch. He had two clean sheets in two matches so it’s a good feeling we have two goalkeepers. Edou will be in goal tomorrow.”
Kepa will feel very hard done by.
The 26-year-old started in goal for Chelsea’s last two games and kept two clean sheets in the process. He played very well too.
Perhaps the lack of continuity at the back might affect the Blues tomorrow.
We can only hope so.
Three points is an absolute must for West Ham. And with Madrid on the horizon for Chelsea, we might not ever get a better chance to beat Tuchel’s side.
