Fabianski’s surprise absence ends up costing West Ham dear

It emerged Fabianski suffered a training ground injury after having his arm trodden on by one of his Hammers teammates.

Darren Randolph came in and showed just why Fabianski is number one.

And it has left West Ham fans anxious over his return.

Insider ExWHUemployee took to Twitter after the 2-1 defeat at the Etihad to provide an update on Fabianski’s fitness.

Ex told West Ham fans he believed the goalkeeper was a doubt for Leeds in nine days time.

David Moyes responds over injury to number one ‘keeper following insider’s claim

But there was relief for West Ham supporters when David Moyes provided his own update.

Both Football London and The Evening Standard reported from Moyes’s post match press conference in Manchester. And they stated that Moyes had confirmed Fabianski had suffered a ‘minor injury and (Moyes) hopes to have back next Monday for Leeds’.

“It was an accidental collision and I don’t think it’s too bad,” Moyes told whufc.com after the game.

“Hopefully he’ll get over it and we’ll also get Lukasz back.”

ExWHUemployee then updated his legion of Twitter followers after Moyes prognosis, adding: “Moyes has said he is “hopeful” Fabianski will be back for Leeds.”

Goalkeeping situation needs looking at this summer

Fabianski is so important to West Ham. He is such a complete goalkeeper and does all the basics brilliantly well.

So much so West Ham fans now take it subconsciously for granted. Randolph was poor for both goals.

For the first, as Moyes said himself after the game, Randolph should have come and claimed the ball.

That goal would never have been conceded if Fabianski was in there. For one the defence would have known their ‘keeper would claim it and would not have retreated so deep into their own six yard box.

And – as he did in the win over Spurs – Fabianski would have wiped out his own teammates if it meant getting to the ball first.

Randolph’s reactions for City’s second were slow too although he can hardly be blamed for that given the ball was fired from close range and through bodies.

It was close to Randolph, though, and did have some West Ham fans thinking Fabianski might have saved it.

West Ham must address the goalkeeper situation in the summer.

Fabianski is not getting any younger. So West Ham need to start planning for his successor at some point. Fabianski is expected to be handed a new two-year deal so this summer Moyes should probably needs to sign a better back-up goalkeeper.
