David Moyes delivers Ben Johnson injury update after surprise absence in West Ham win over Everton

Hammers boss David Moyes has delivered a Ben Johnson injury update after the defender’s surprise absence in West Ham’s win over Everton.

West Ham fans were surprised when they saw Ryan Fredericks handed a rare start against the Toffees.

And there was no place on the bench for Johnson either.

The England Under 21 international has been superb for West Ham in the absence of Vladimir Coufal.

He was deservedly called up and played for England Under 21s in a 3-0 win over Albania in midweek.

But West Ham fans are understandably concerned at his no-show with the huge Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon coming up on Thursday night.

West Ham’s manager has been speaking to the press after the win over Everton – which came courtesy of goals from Aaron Cresswell and the returning Jarrod Bowen.

“He felt his hamstring playing for England,” Moyes revealed (Football.London).

“He trained Friday and Saturday but felt it Saturday. We don’t think it’s bad but it was a decision today.

“We didn’t not want him for other weeks. I’m hoping he’ll be ok.”

So too are West Ham fans. Especially as Coufal has only just returned to training following a lay-off after a hernia operation.

Time will tell if Johnson will be available for the Lyon clash.

There was also slight concern over West Ham talisman Declan Rice.

He was spotted jarring his knee during the match and appeared to be walking gingerly for a spell.

The outstanding positive – besides a huge three points of course – was the return of Bowen.

The attacker looked in good shape and got the winning goal too.

Another standout moment from West Ham’s win over Everton was Cresswell’s stunning free-kick.

It was so good it sent the Sky Sports cameraman tumbling to the floor as Cresswell goaded the Everton fans in celebration.
