West Ham fans predict 26/27’s breakout star: Mohamadou Kante the ‘outstanding prospect’

When West Ham United suffered relegation out of the Premier League for the very first time in 2003, they would bounce back two years later thanks in part to a core of homegrown talent.

Alan Pardew lost Jermain Defoe, David James, Joe Cole and more while putting his faith in Nigel Reo-Coker, Anton Ferdinand and a teenage Mark Noble.

The reward was not only a promotion in 2005, but also an FA Cup final and a top-half finish during an uber-successful first season back in the big time.

Which players could actually BENEFIT from a Championship season? 🤨

West Ham Championship Xi predicted

If West Ham United reach Wembley and secure 9th place under Nuno Espirito Santo a couple of years down the line – with Freddie Potts, Ollie Scarles, Ezra Mayers, Lewis Orford, Preston Fearon and Mohamadou Kante the backbone of a younger, hungrier outfit, – well, this may feel fanciful right now as the wounds sting, but it has happened before.

A big season looms for West Ham United’s youngsters

A move to Everton appears likely for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville and Taty Castellanos are expected to go as well, and that is before you get onto El Hadji Malick Diouf, Dinos Mavropanos and Jarrod Bowen.

With a repeat of 2003’s post-relegation exodus seemingly inevitable, which of the current crop of Hammers youngsters can hope to emulate the success of Reo-Coker, Ferdinand and Noble two decades later?

“Definitely got to use more of our youngsters next season, like Scarles, Mayers, Potts, [George] Earthy etc,” one fan writes on X. “It’s their time to get a place in this team.”

“I think Kante and Scarles are the two outstanding prospects,” another agrees. “Mayers has done well also and we may have a hidden gem in [Keiber] Lamadrid if signed. We also have others.

“The future could be bright but the dark cloud of Sullivan needs to be lifted from the club.”

The future of Lamadrid is one of many personnel decisions facing the Hammers this summer. The Venezuela international started only once during a loan spell from Deportivo la Guiara, and he didn’t exactly set the world alight in the FA Cup against Burton Albion.

West Ham can still sign Lamadrid permanently for as little as £870,000, though. A low-risk, potentially high-reward option.

We at Hammers News feel that Scarles, Mayers and particularly Freddie Potts will have big roles to play next season. Scarles could replace the exit-linked Diouf, Mayers’ versatility gives Nuno options at centre-half and left-back, while Potts excelled on loan at Portsmouth in a previous stint at this level.

Box-to-box dynamo Kante, though, feels like the sort of talent who could make the transition to the men’s game look pretty effortless.

“The Championship is the perfect place for the likes of Freddie Potts, Ollie Scarles, George Earthy and Ezra Mayers, but they must be trusted and given game time to prove themselves,” one fan writes. “These young players could be vital to the future of the club and where it’s heading.”

Nuno Espirito Santo manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers celebrates during the Sky Bet Championship match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City at Molineux on April 15, 2018 in Wolverhampton, England.

On our official Facebook page, the prospect of West Ham’s next generation becoming the spine of a promotion-winning team is keeping spirits afloat following Sunday’s relegation.

In addition to Kante, Mayers and Scarles – who played 41 first-team games between them in 2025/26 – Josh Ajala, Preston Fearon, Airidas Golambeckis and Finlay Herrick may fancy their chances of making the step up.

“Mayers will be a real player,” one TalkingPoint user argues.

“Potts, Scarles, Kante and Earthy should start,” another says. “Mayers has looked solid. Ajala, Golembeckis should be integrated. If Mads [Hermansen] stays, Herrick is a capable back-up. Need a mix of young players and experience.

“Preston Fearon is the one to look out for.”

“It seems Potts got more of an opportunity than Kante, and Kante can offer us more. He’s a much better player. Potts is decent but no way ahead of Kante.

“As long as we sort out our team properly I will be happy.”
