West Ham deal for ‘scary’ Dom Ballard is a £5m no-brainer

For £5 million, West Ham United could land themselves a striker who scored 23 goals in 44 games last season, in addition to claiming both the Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year awards.

But there’s a catch. When is there not?

Said striker scored those 23 goals in League One; the third tier of English football.

Yet if the reports are true and West Ham are considering Leyton Orient’s Dom Ballard, claims of a £5 million price-tag means this is a transfer which falls firmly into the ‘low risk’, potentially ‘high reward’ bracket.

West Ham United obviously feel that Ballard can make the step up. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be showing an interest, as per the Daily Mail.

A certain Callum Wilson is living proof that a prolific track record in League One is translatable to the Championship or even the Premier League.

Ballard just needs a club who will give him the platform to do just that. And, for an eighth of the fee West Ham paid for Max Kilman, the Guildford-born England Under-21 international is a £5 million punt worth taking.

West Ham United must leap at the chance to sign Leyton Orient’s Dom Ballard

Football League World report that Leyton Orient are holding out for twice the £2.5 million fee Bristol City offered a few days ago. A bid rejected out of hand by the Londoners.

Orient are demanding a fee that would make Ballard their biggest-ever export, overtaking Ethan Galbraith.

Interestingly, West Ham are reported admirers of Galbraith too. The former Manchester United youngster will not be wearing claret and blue next season; He is set to join Stoke City in a £10 million deal from Swansea.

The success of Galbraith in South Wales is further proof, though, that the gap between the third tier and the second is maybe not as steep as some suggest.

Callum Wilson is on the verge of ‘Premier League Centurian’ status. A man with 96 top-flight goals burst onto the scene with 21 for Coventry City in 2013/14.

Dele Alli [MK Dons], Ivan Toney, Dwight Gayle [Peterborough], Ademola Lookman [Charlton], Adam Lallana, Jose Fonte, Ricky Lambert, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain [all Southampton], the list goes on.

Of course, Not every League One graduate goes on to score a brace against Real Madrid, to win the Europa League with Atalanta, or play for England. But the fact that some have should ease concerns surrounding Ballard.

Ballard has ‘scary’ potential and would be a bargain in today’s market

His 23 goals last term came from an ‘expected goals’ tally of 19. The sheer variety of finishes also stands out.

Ballard scored clever volleys, wily tap-ins, converted chances with both feet and – despite being a comparatively diminutive 5ft 10ins in a league of giant centre-backs – racked up an impressive six headers.

“He has got so much improvement in him it is scary,” Orient boss Richie Wellens told London News in March. “The kid can go a long long way.

“If he continues to grow, then who knows where he could go.”

Theo Walcott, who trained briefly with a young Ballard on the South Coast, even admitted that he felt the former Reading, Blackpool and Cambridge United loanee could go on to be ‘better than me!’.

If you thought the transfer market was crazy before, the 2026 version has gone pretty much certifiable. West Ham coaxed £85 million from Tottenham for Mateus Fernandes, and that is not even the biggest midfield signing of the week in the Premier League.

In this day and age, £5 million on a 23-goal striker who only celebrated his 21st birthday in April? Signing Dom Ballard would not be without risk, but those risks are dwarfed by the potential rewards.
