Jack Wilshere is not going anywhere this summer but West Ham United could be about to finally see the best of the midfielder.

West Ham boss David Moyes must sell to buy this summer (Claret & Hugh).

Albian Ajeti has been sold to Celtic. And Jordan Hugill could soon follow him out of the door with discussions ongoing over a move to Norwich.

West Ham would undoubtedly love to get Wilshere and his £100,000 per week (wtfoot) wages off the books.

Stark reality facing Wilshere in final year of Hammers contract

The reality is no club is going to come in for Wilshere. A loan would not benefit West Ham unless the club taking Wilshere was willing to pay his wages.

Inevitable injuries – which have blighted the immensely talented playmaker’s career – have restricted Wilshere to just 18 appearances in two years at his boyhood club West Ham.

It is a crying shame. But many supporters have been quick to say ‘I told you so’ because it was excruciatingly obvious given the player’s unfortunate track record.

This season is the last of Wilshere’s three-year Hammers contract. At 28 Wilshere should have his best years ahead of him.

But the former Arsenal star is facing a fight for his football future.

Fight or flight for playmaker who should still have best years ahead of him

With finances in the game being impacted by the global health crisis, there will not be a host of clubs queueing up to offer Wilshere a big contract.

So don’t be surprised if West Ham suddenly see the best of Wilshere this season.

This is the player’s last chance to either earn a somewhat unlikely new deal at West Ham. Or – more likely – put himself in the shop window for a new club come next summer.

Don’t be surprised to see a now fully fit Wilshere start to make the kind of impact West Ham had hoped for when they snapped him up following the expiry of his Gunners contract.

That is not to suggest Wilshere’s lack of game time is his fault or through a lack of dedication. Clearly he doesn’t want to be injured.

But this season it is fight or flight for Wilshere. And that often brings out the best in a player.

Indeed in many respects it is akin to a player on loan who is desperate to earn a permanent deal.

With a full pre-season behind him Wilshere could genuinely be an unexpected ace card for the Hammers.

Moyes rates Wilshere but can he finally make an impact for boyhood club?

David Moyes certainly rates him. That’s according to Wilshere himself.

Wilshere has told whufc.com that he has the backing of Moyes, who is a keen admirer of the former Arsenal man.

“When he (Moyes) first came, I had a few conversations with him and I got the feeling from him that he rated me,” Wilshere told whufc.com.

“But I was still six weeks away from being able to get in front of him and show him what I can do.

“I know he’s been around for years and I’ve been around for years, so he sort of has an idea, but he’s never worked with me so it’s important I show him what I’m about, how I train and what I can bring to the team.”

The importance of this season will not be lost on Wilshere.

But can he stay fit long enough to save his footballing future?

Everyone at West Ham hopes so.
