Said Benrahma put in yet another poor performance for West Ham United away at Chelsea yesterday afternoon and David Moyes would not have been happy.

The 26-year-old was given the nod to start the game at Stamford Bridge as David Moyes made six changes to the team that drew with Burnley at the London Stadium last weekend.

Benrahma has been really poor since he returned from the Africa Cup of Nations a couple of months ago.

The Algeria international seems to be totally devoid of conscience and that is never a good thing when you are supposed to be a game-changing match-winner.

Yesterday, I wrote a piece here on Hammers News suggesting that the game against Chelsea could be make or break for Benrahma. And unfortunately for the former Brentford man, he failed to make any kind of statement to Moyes or the Hammers fans…

Said Benrahma display for West Ham against Chelsea would have angered Moyes

The 26-year-old was so poor against Chelsea.

He had numerous chances to get in behind the Blues’ back-line but his lack of pace was exposed throughout the match.

Benrahma was even outpaced by the 37-year-old Thiago Silva on two separate occasions.

Not only does he lack any kind of speed but he is also incredibly weak in the challenge. He lost out numerous times during duels with Chelsea players inside his own third.

Another thing the Algerian struggles with is getting his body between the ball and opposing players. He needs to be more intelligent in the way in which he protects the ball with his body. Far too often he makes it easy for the opposition to intercept the football from him.

Now, Moyes isn’t blameless in all of this.

The Scot’s treatment of Benrahma at times has been questionable to say the least. He seems like the kind of player who needs an arm around his shoulder. He needs the confidence and trust from his manager to go out and express himself.

That hasn’t been the case at all. Benrahma now seems scared to do anything and mostly just turns around and passes back to Aaron Cresswell or whoever is behind him on the left flank.

Moyes has regularly criticised the decision making of West Ham ace Benrahma (The Evening Standard).

Having said all of that, the onus is still on the Algerian to quite simply do more. He needs to show more courage and belief in his own ability. Maybe he’s just not cut out for elite football in the Premier league. Or maybe he’s just not suited to West Ham’s system.

Claret and Hugh suggested recently that Moyes could be prepared to allow Benrahma to leave West Ham in the summer.

And it seems like time is running out for Benny at the London Stadium…
