Only way to save Nayef Aguerd’s West Ham career is to play him in a completely new position

David Moyes has to try to come up with a clever way to save Nayef Aguerd’s West Ham United career.

West Ham centre-back Nayef Aguerd has been really poor for us this season, and David Moyes either has to drop him or play him in a new position.

The Hammers defender has become a target for the opposition time and time again, and Moyes absolutely has to step in and change all of that.

West Ham paid £28 million to sign Aguerd from Rennes back in the summer of 2022 (The Evening Standard).

Unfortunately for the Moroccan though, he has really struggled to properly establish himself at the London Stadium so far.

Despite some glimpses early on of his undeniable quality, he has regressed badly and if truth be known, he’s just not suited to playing Premier League football. I’m almost certain that the 27-year-old will be sold in the summer, if a decent bid comes in for him.

However, there is something Moyes could do to save Aguerd’s Hammers future…

Only way to save Nayef Aguerd’s West Ham career

I reckon the Moroccan should be taken out of the firing line by Moyes.

He doesn’t have the concentration levels, positional awareness or discipline to play as a central defender in the Premier League – it’s time to play him as a left-back.

If Moyes does try this, he would have to move Emerson Palmieri out to the left wing – something else that would be ideal right now with Lucas Paqueta out injured.

Even when Paqueta is back, it would be nice to see him in his natural number 10 role, with Emerson maintaining his position out wide on the left.

Meanwhile, Aguerd seems to have all of the attributes needed to play as a left-back in the Premier League.

The former Rennes man is absolutely rapid, and is a very tenacious tackler. He has the energy and athleticism needed to get up and down the left hand flank for the entire 90 minutes, and I think he’d be so much more useful as a left-back than a central defender.

If Moyes is to save Nayef Aguerd’s West Ham career, he needs to make that specific change sooner rather than later.
