Isn’t it nice to see everybody at West Ham United on the same page for once? Nils Koppen, the club’s newly-appointed Director of Player Recruitment, wasted little time following Daniel Kretinsky’s party line at his official unveiling.
Former PSV and Rangers chief Koppen has been chosen not only to bring his unique brand of talent-spotting to the London Stadium – Ismael Saibari, Johan Bakayoko and Hamza Igamane are headline discoveries by the 41-year-old Belgian – but also to retain the best and brightest currently at Nuno Espirito Santo’s disposal.
Nils Koppen helped build PSV’s title-winning squad! What do you want from him at West Ham?
After increasing his stake from 27 to 43 per cent, Kretinsky spoke of his desire to ‘retain as many of our key players as possible’.
During his first interview with the official West Ham United website, this was a point Koppen was obviously keen to reiterate.
Nils Koppen explains his West Ham United plan
“I am really pleased to have this fantastic opportunity and very much looking forward to joining such a big club and being a part of something new. I’m also looking forward to working with Nuno – he is a very experienced and highly-respected head coach,” Koppen begins.
“The first focus will obviously be the transfer window and identifying the correct players to move us forward next season. We also want to keep the core squad intact.

“They had a very good run at the end of the Premier League season, so if we can keep that together and not make too many changes, we can start off with a good base.”
It is not just Kretinsky who Koppen is fully aligned with.
While the Czech billionaire prepares to fund a West Ham spending spree partly out of his own pocket as well as the £85 million sale of Mateus Fernandes, Koppen already knows the exact needs and wants of the head coach.
“Nuno has emphasised that we all must have our focus together in the same direction,” said a man who helped lay the foundations for three successive Eredivisie titles at PSV.
“For any new players coming in, they have to be fully on board for what we want to achieve and feel what the expectations are for a big club. It is a huge honour to represent West Ham United.”
Karim Virani unveils a man who knows from Rangers
Relegation or not, West Ham will not be bullied into selling star players for cut-price fees. Manchester United found that out the hard way as the Hammers eked a staggering £85 million out of Tottenham for the aforementioned Fernandes.
If West Ham do decide to cash in on another big name, it will be on their terms. And for big money.
West Ham’s interim CEO Karim Virani had a spell at Rangers from 2023 to 2024. His time at Ibrox coincided with that of Koppen’s.
“We are delighted to welcome Nils to West Ham United,” Virani said while welcoming a familiar face to the London Stadium. “The Board was impressed by his experience and proven track record in successful player recruitment and, having worked with him previously, I know he will fit perfectly into our new football leadership structure.

“Since the end of last season, the reshaping of our men’s football structure has been a priority focus for the Board. The appointment of Nils is a key building block in our new way of working. He will add to the excellent individuals we already have in the scouting team as we create and develop a player recruitment model that everyone associated with West Ham United can be proud of.”
With him leading recruitment, you can expect more Mohamadou Kantes and less Niclas Fullkrugs going forward. Koppen has often emphasised the need to be ‘creative’ and ‘think outside the box’. Potentially, dragging West Ham’s recruitment model kicking and screaming into the modern age.
No more high-profile veterans on eye-watering wages.
Virani sums up the new plan pretty neatly, while also reinforcing the plan to keep Jarrod Bowen, Tomas Soucek, Taty Csatellanos and more in claret and blue.
“Obviously, we have a short-term goal of winning promotion back to the Premier League as quickly as possible.
“But we also have a clear vision for the right approach when it comes to the identity and strength of our men’s playing squad, based around the core objectives of retaining our best players, developing young prospects through our Academy and recruiting ambitious, talented players with their best years in front of them.
“Nils and the rest of the excellent team already in place at Rush Green will play a key role in helping us to achieve that ambition.”
Earlier in the day, Metz starlet Alpha Toure confirmed he is ‘interested’ in a move to the English Championship. Reports say that he has given his word to West Ham, snubbing Saudi Arabian offers in the process.
A 20-year-old available for a bargain fee of £6 million? A fitting way to kick off the Koppen era.
