But doing so knowing they could soon be competing with the likes of West Ham for the European places given the huge wealth of their new owners.

West Ham and the rest of the Premier League got a glimpse of Newcastle’s new spending power in January when Eddie Howe forked out around £100m on players in a bid to stay in the top flight.

And it turns out Newcastle have done Moyes a huge favour in West Ham’s quest for Europa League glory as a result of that January business.

Because the Magpies made West Ham’s Europa League quarter-final opponents Lyon significantly weaker when they signed brilliant midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from the Ligue 1 side for £40m in the last window.

West Ham overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to beat six-times champions Sevilla 2-1 on aggregate on a famous night in east London.

And West Ham were today drawn to face Ligue 1 side Lyon next.

The Hammers also know that – should they progress – they will face either Eintracht Frankfurt or Barcelona in the semi-finals.

Lyon are a historic club and another mouthwatering tie is in prospect.

Any West Ham fans who followed the group stages closely will know Lyon were the team who secured the most points with 16 from their six group stage matches -five wins and a draw.

But they have not been anything like the same side since Newcastle lured their star midfielder Guimaraes to the Premier League and replaced him with Spurs flop Tanguy NDombele.

The sale of Guimaraes did not go down well with Lyon fans.

And West Ham will be hoping Newcastle have done them a huge favour in their bid for Europa glory as Moyes’s side now sit two ties from a dream final in Seville.
