Fulham have absolutely no right to beat David Moyes to £11m summer signing and West Ham simply must get a deal place.
West Ham reportedly have an option to make Alphonse Areola’s signing from PSG permanent for £11m (Jeunes Footeux).
Quite why West Ham did not move quickly to do just that in January – or at least get a concrete deal in place for the summer – only Moyes will know.
And if the club were yet to be convinced despite a string of impressive performances from Areola for West Ham, THAT save against Sevilla should have sealed the deal.
But now the Hammers are reportedly facing the very real threat of losing out to Areola’s former club Fulham for the France international goalkeeper this summer.
Football League World last week claimed that if the Cottagers are promoted to the Premier League, they will attempt to bring Areola back to Craven Cottage. There is no ‘if’ – Fulham are all but promoted already.
And 90Min have since reported that West Ham’s hopes of re-signing Areola could be scuppered by Fulham’s interest.
Let’s have it straight, Fulham have absolutely no right to beat Moyes to the £11m signing of Areola and West Ham simply must get a deal in place.
If the door is still open for Fulham, it begs the question what are West Ham waiting for?
The lack of signings in January was bad enough.
But here is a player who has proved himself during a loan spell designed solely for that purpose.
In fact it would be unforgiveable on the West Ham board’s part if Moyes loses out to Fulham for Areola.
Sam Johnstone – with whom West Ham have also been extensively linked – is not in the same class as World Cup winning squad player Areola quite frankly.
But should we be surprised those Johnstone rumours aren’t going away given the West Brom ‘keeper is available for free.
Areola has proven that he is a truly top-class goalkeeper when he has had a chance at West Ham just as he did at Fulham. The spectacular save against Sevilla was as good as a goal in the context of that last 16 tie.
His kicking, with both feet, is immense. At a towering 6ft 5in, the West Ham loan star has superb presence and he has great experience at top clubs including PSG and Real Madrid.
Having just turned 29 he could and should be West Ham’s long-term successor for Lukasz Fabianski.
West Ham must activate their option. Areola is an absolute bargain at twice the price!
And missing out to Fulham is not an option. That’s no disrespect to Fulham who are a fine club. But West Ham are a genuine European outfit looking to establish themselves as top six regulars.
It would be akin to missing a glaring open goal if West Ham’s board can’t get a deal done for Areola – a player they have had in the building all season. And it does not bode well for the big summer rebuild facing Moyes if the club loses out to a newly promoted side on such a straightforward transfer.
