If West Ham United planned to use the 2026 World Cup as a means of scouting fresh talent, Promise David’s stand-out cameo performance during Canada’s hard-earned 1-1 draw with Bosnia will not have gone unnoticed.
It was reported in the build-up to the January transfer window, that the Hammers were impressed by David’s performances at Union Saint-Gilloise.
Fifteen goals in 37 appearances over in Belgium is not to be sniffed at. But an assist of such high-quality, after only 17 minutes on the pitch and when your national team is pursuing their first ever point on the world stage?
These are the atoms which make up dreams.

Cyle Larin, the man who rifled home Canada’s leveller at a rousing Toronto field, secured himself a permanent move to Southampton on the eve of the tournament.
Who knows? Maybe the man who set him up could be competing with Larin for the Championship title next season with West Ham United again in the market for number nines.
West Ham United should keep looking at Canada’s Promise David

As Sassuolo’s ex-Watford prospect Ismael Kone broke through the Bosnia midfield, a ball was fired into David’s feet.
With his back to goal, a host of physical centre-halves around him, the Ontario-born 24-year-old needed just one deft touch to flick the ball beautifully into Larin’s path.
As Canada’s biggest-name attacker flopped – Jonathan David taking his poor Juventus form into the World Cup – two of Jesse Marsch’s less-heralded alternatives combined to secure a little piece of Canadian history on home soil.
“Promise David honestly might be our best striker,” one grateful Canada fan wrote on X.
“Promise David is gonna create generational wealth for himself in this World Cup,” writes another, his David stocks rising sharply. “My pick for surprise player of the tournament.”

“Promise David is the most ‘Prem proven’ striker that’s never played in the Prem…”
That could change fairly soon.
Well, providing the Hammers pick up where they left off in late-2025. And, of course, providing top-flight football returns to the London Stadium in 2027.
The £17 million-rated David is nicknamed ‘the Baby Lukaku’, and it does not take long to realise why comparisons with Belgium’s all-time record goalscorer exist.
David is a colossus of a man at 6ft 5ins. Almost as wide as he is tall, the assist for Larin’s 78th minute leveller highlighted both his back-to-goal qualities and a lightness of foot which belies his gargantuan frame.
In short, a very English sort of centre-forward, even if his loyalties lie very much with Canada.
